日本統治時代に運河 としても利用可能なように掘削したことで、現在のような広い川となった (当時の名称は高雄川)。戦後の 1948 年にここで情死事件が起こり、それを報じる新聞記事の報道写真 にボート乗り場「愛河遊船所」の看板が写り込んだことから「愛河」と呼ばれるようになったと伝わる。
