The somtums and larbs are the strongest sections of the menu. Mushroom larb is fantastic, as is the grilled pork neck somtum. Skip the rice and noodle dishes (other than the sticky rice , order that!)
A somtum is a must, and all this stuff is killer, too: grilled coconut milk marinated pork skewers , pork fried rice with Thai basil , deep fried chicken thighs , any larb (but esp. the mushroom ).
The somtum here is hands down the best somtum in the city . Super flavorful— a tad sweet, plus solid umami. Go vegetarian or with grilled pork neck , and order it medium spicy for the right kick.
Some of the best authentic Thai that will get you sweating from the heat! Duck larb , papaya salad with pork , crab fried rice and pad kee mao all amazing. Wash it down with a cold Singha beer .
Got the pad kee mao and my friend got the pad see ew with shrimp and squid . Even the pad thai was really flavorful. Definitely coming back to try more
Delicious! The papaya salad with salted egg was an explosion of flavors, same with meats & sausages platter . All noodle dishes were really good, a bit on the sweet side. Thai cocktails is a must try.
I'm Thai and I can say this is authentic Thai food . It's also reasonable price
Most authentic Thai place in NYC! You can tell by the spiciness . This place will not water-down a spicy papaya salad for the "farangs"!! Try the salads and pork larb , just like in Thailand!
One of the forefront Isan Thai restaurants in Manhattan, Somtum Der offers a well-spiced and flavorful array of dishes, including the larb (meat salads ), somtum (papaya salads ), noodles , and meats.
The papaya salad with salted egg was an explosion of flavors, same with meats & sausages platter . All noodle dishes were really good, a bit on the sweeter side. Thai cocktails is a must try.
The tum thai (papaya salad ), pad ki mao (flat noodles with beef ), & fried rice with beef & an egg were all really good. Service needs work (waitress took my fried rice when I was only half done!)
Great for spice lovers but void of flavor. My sinuses were instantly cleared. I had the pad thai with crab , pad khee mao and grilled beef . Everything was blah.
Delicious, flavorful food. We got things medium spicy and it was perfect. Four dishes was good for three people, but we probably would have eaten a fifth if we'd ordered it.
You can’t go wrong with anything here. The papaya salads are great, and I recently discovered the crab and egg fried rice ????
Worth the wait, and you can make a reservation . Great creative drinks and food - the skewers , fried chicken thigh are great. Can't wait to try more!
Pad Ki Mao was money! ???????? The pork ???? is all ground up and pretty damn spicy . So spicy ???? I needed to order a glass of milk for my little baby ???????? mouth.
What a amazing flavor! Especially their papaya salad it is soo good and spicy ! For spicy lovers, this restaurant is heaven.
For some really spicy and truly authentic Thai food , this is the best place to go to! Read more
my opinion of this place has only become loftier with a second visit. great larb in addition to the delicious fried chicken
This is the real deal! I went to their Saladang branch in and the food here is similar. A quick trip to Bangkok without leaving New York! Wanna know what's in now? Somtum served on tray. Get it ;)
Try a salad where the fruit is tossed with tomatoes , chiles, fish sauce and lime in a wooden mortar and pestle. Add a salted egg if you’re feeling daring. Read more
Some of the best fried chicken in the city , and the papaya salad is great. Also a fan of the rice cooked in fermented shrimp paste , and their coffee .
Pad Ki Mao Pork & Basil was delish -- beef skewers were tasty -- would skip the duck Larb (personal texture aversion here) but great flavor! Will definitely be back :)
Crab pad Thai is the best thing we got. Better than papaya salad in my opinion
Lychee martini - sooo delish I'm typing as I sip on my third! ... Thai Macarena with sticky rice - spicy as hell on a platter but YUMMY! Deep fried chicken - one in a million !! Most authentic THAI on NY
The food was excellent. I feel like any Thai restaurant I've visited before this has been a sham. The food was very spicy though, so make sure you can tolerate it or you'll be in for a long night.
The pork Larb and the duck Larb should be your go to dishes. The crab pad Thai was out of this world. This place taste DOES INDEED remind me real Thai cuisine.
Absolutely fantastic food, has an entire menu dedicated to allergies. Easy to choose amazing Gluten Free options without worry. Try the Thai tea tini!
Amazing food from northern Thailand, not your traditional and overdone noodle and curry dishes . Papaya Salad and beef skewers in coconut milk are a must!
The duck larb is not to be messed with haha. Spicy as fuck but real tasty. The highlight for me is the really good music . Afrobeat with some Fela thrown in? Awesome. #tm
If you come here on your birthday they’ll play the birthday song over the speakers and sing for you.
A fresh take on Isaan Thai cuisine, Somtum Der's dark larb is legitimately spicy and all of the papaya salads are delicious. Worth a stop if you're in the East Village .
Best Of -VV. Specializes in fare from the northeastern Isaan region of the country . Somtum der refers to the green papaya salad , and so that dish is front and center here
Holy crap so spicy . Your lips will be numb for an hour after, so good if you like that kind of thing. Dishes are legit and the cocktails tasty and boozey.
saw Jonathan gold here!! get Sai krok isan(fried sausages ), one of the spicy papaya salads . khao pad krapao moo is another favorite if you want something with rice .
the som tum with mackerel and coconut rice is incredible and everything i've ever wanted on a plate.
this is the realness. the grilled pork in coconut milk ! and any somtum, but especially the pork neck variant. congrats on the Michelin win, that’s validation!
Skip other dishes and make sure you order somtum, be it Thai or Lao style (with fermented fish ), fried chicken , and sticky rice . Given I'm a Thai who loves somtum, I know what I'm talking about ;)
Crab pad Thai is unique and have lots of crab chunks on top. On the pricier side though but expected ($15)
The fried chicken is some of the best fried chicken in the city in any style.
Pad see ew , larb , and cocktails are great! Michelin starred without any arrogance -- just great Thai food and a lively ambiance.
Papaya salad . Always. This place is so cheap and delicious. $55 tasty dinner (including two cocktails !) for two? Easy choice.
This place is legit. Portion sizes of somtum is less than Zabb Elee and they don't use Chinese long bean but it still tastes amazing. I have to ask for 10 chilis to satisfy my palate.
Try to tell the kitchen to make the Papaya Salad with egg less spicy ! 2 chili 's instead of 3! And also the excellent Pad Thai with crab . Didnt tast the crab with all that dragon fire
Great real Thai food , specializing in the Isaan region. So many papaya salads ! Not the rainbow curry place you thought was Thai food in college...
My favorite Thai restaurant in NYC! Isan style & several variations of Som Tum salad . Portions are for sharing and very authentic !
Funky, fiery food of Thailand’s northeast Isan region. Somtum Der takes the trend a step further by focusing on the invigorating green-papaya salads known as som tum .
This place is known for their papaya salads , try the one with the salted duck egg ! The blue crab one is a bit fishy, tasty, but fishy.
Yas Yas Yas get a beer and some spicy shit. Basically everything on the menu, but make sure to get a larb moo
Yummy Thai food ! Has a single michelin star , but i don't know if it's to that level. Definitely still delicious though
Everything we had here was great. Highlights were the full snapper - herbaceous and sweet, and the fiery fried chicken wings. Spicy mango cocktail on the side = magic. - Liza Fryberger
phat thai w prawns was amazing! also the fries are so unique and a must. - Nieki Esmaili
Pad see eiw w/chicken was the second best Pad see eiw I've tasted. Great service too! - Þorgeir Logason
The ginger is so good! Lots of little bits of candied ginger for ginger enthusiasts (like me) - Anissa
Had the Grass Kilt. Nice and light for summer. Great ambiance. Sliders are unique. - Laura Hammer
They make fresh new flavors everyday. I recommend the raspberry sorbet and burned marshmallows flavors - Diana Galvis
