元々は建仁寺塔頭清住院であったのを、明治6年に歌舞練場として改装しました。客席は全部で928席あり、有形文化財に指定されています。
4月は都をどりをやっています。
明治5年、京都で博覧会が開催された際の余興として始まりました。毎年4月1日～30日までの一ヶ月間に渡り京舞い（井上流）が催され春の風物詩となっています。おすすめは「茶券付特等観覧券」。観覧前、お茶席にて芸妓さんのお手前を見ながら、お茶と和菓子をいただけます。和菓子をのせた団子皿はそのまま持ち帰ることが出来ます。 - hasshiy
