現在は老若男女楽しめる公園 だが、大戦末期には軍司令部のトンネル が設けられるなど、本土決戦に向けた重要拠点だった。1945 年に宇都宮に派遣された高射砲部隊が八幡山 に対空高射砲陣地を築いたとも伝わるが、記録としては残っていない模様。
