1800 lbs elephant seals see us little humans the way we see possums . Guided tour was full but we snuck down to southern beach where lazy elephant seals were enjoyed siesta. Best to come on a weekend

4 mile round trip hike on flat ground. See the elephant seals flopping around. Very helpful staff . Worth the side trip if you are driving down the coast.

Park off the road just a bit south of the official park entrance, hike 10 min to barn to get permit to enter sea lion area, then hike 20 min to see the sea lions up close.
