Originally the gate had a covered bridge house. In 1334 two drawbridges were built for carts and for pedestrian crossing. After demolition the gate was rebuilt in 1674-'77 in its current Gothic style.
In this area was found the Navile, an artificial canal that allowed boats to reach the nearby river port of Corticella.
Its beautiful but there are better ones around Bologna.
