Gio-ji, amazing moss gardens , you need to walk <20mins from Tenryu-ji

A grove of thick moss decorates the surroundings of this temple . beautiful.

Quite a climb to get there, passing the bamboo garden and such. Pretty small temple . Along the way passing residential area which is very good walk.

Must-see, serene and quiet temple a few mins walk away from the crowds of tourists at the bamboo grove . Entrance is JPY 300.

祇王・祇女姉妹は白拍子として、清盛に寵愛されていたが、仏御前という白拍子へ清盛の寵愛が移ると、母・刀自とともに尼となり、この祇王寺と隠れ住むようになった。そこへ尼になった仏御前も訪ねて来て、4人は念仏を唱えながら余生をともに過ごした。世の無常に翻弄された4人がこの美しい寺で、少しでも穏やかに過ごせたことを祈ります。

境内には、 祇王・祇女・刀自の墓、平清盛の供養塔、祇王祇女仏刀自旧跡の碑など平家にまつわる史跡 があります
